Horses are very rare in Africa. The few to be found west of Sudan, from the lands of the Sahara and Sahel down to the fringes of the tropical forests, belong to the king, the chief warrior and to notable persons. Due to the dense humidity of the tropical rainforest and the deadly tsetse fly, only restricted numbers of horses survive. And yet rider and mount sculptures are common among the Dogon, Djenne, Bamana, Senufo and the Yoruba people. The Akan - Asante people of Ghana and the Kotoko of Chad produced a good deal of small casting brass and bronze sculptures. Some of the artists could barely even have caught a glimpse of a horse. This visually stunning book presents a wealth of African art depicting the horse and its rider in a variety of guises, from Epa masks and Yoruba divination cups to Dogon sculptures and Senufo carvings. In Mali, the Bamana, Boso and Somono ethnic groups still celebrate the festivals of the puppet masquerade. The final chapter of this book is dedicated to the art and cult of these festivals, which are still alive and well. It is not the habit of the African artist to provide intellectual statements for his work, yet his unique creative dynamic and far-searching vision does not conflict with that of

Erste Kunst Primitive Kunst
Die Ausdrücke erste Kunst und primitive Kunst sind verwendet(angestellt), um auf die künstlerischen Produktionen der "traditionellen" sogenannten Gesellschaften zu bezeichnen, " ohne Schrift " oder "Primitive". Von Ausdehnung bezeichnet der Terminus(Frist) gemeinschaftlich auf die traditionelle künstlerische Produktion der NichtWestkulturen.
Der Ausdruck " primitive Kunst ", mit dem Kolonialismus verbunden, ist deutlich pejorativ und ist in Überlebtheit zugunsten " erster Kunst " gefallen seit einigen Jahren. Aber dieser Ausdruck mehr, der ist valorisante, bleibt umstritten, sofern sie auch eine evolutionistische Konzeption und ethnocentriste von Humangesellschaften übersetzte: die Westgesellschaften stellten(führten) eine " gelungene " ersten Künsten " entgegenstehende Kunst " her(herbei), die das Werk der Völker wären, die an einem archaistischen Zustand(Staat) der Menschheit nah geblieben sind. Außerdem unterscheiden sich die wichtigen Formen erster Kunst (in Afrika oder in Ozeanien, zum Beispiel) viel älterer(ehemaligerer) Kunstformen (vorgeschichtliche Kunst oder neolithische Kunst) deutlich. The Sejen bird figures of the Senufo People, Ivory Coast
The art of the Senufo people is quite popular nowadays, and their sculpture and masks are found in many European and American collections. There are about 3 million Senufo living in the north of the Ivory Coast and the southern area of Mali. As in every country that was in touch with Islam and Christianity, many aspects of the traditional "native" culture were destroyed, especially in the 1950's where a new syncretic movment, "Massa or Alkora", was in the area. There has been much French ethnologic field researchin that region. Those pioneers had their own methods of acquiring pieces (that's another story).

In the nineteenth century, ethnologists who collected and catalogued objects of art from Africa were not concerned with
discovering the names of the artists or even their ethnic identities; usually, broad indications of geographic origins, such as
"the Lower Congo," "the region of the White Nile," or the "River Uelle" were deemed sufficient identification. In addition,
because these objects were regarded merely as documents of a mode of life inferior to that of Western societies, no effort
was made to categorize them stylistically. Although during the first ten years of this century, French and German artists
revealed the artistic independence and importance of African sculpture, scholars persisted in considering the works of

Leo Frobenius
Leo Viktor Frobenius (29 juin 1873 à Berlin - 9 août 1938, Biganzolo, Lac Majeur, Piémont, Italie) était un ethnologue et archéologue allemand, essentiel dans l'ethnographie germanique.
Biographie
Leo Frobenius entreprend en 1904 sa première expédition en Afrique, dans le Kasaï congolais, et formule à cette occasion sa théorie de l'Atlantis africaine. Jusqu'en 1918, il voyage, dans l'Afrique du nord et du nord-est, en particulier le Soudan central et occidental. En 1920, il fonde l'Institut pour la morphologie culturelle à Munich. Il devient professeur honoraire de l'Université de Francfort en 1932, et directeur du musée ethnographique de la ville en 1935.
Frobenius est l'un des premiers ethnologues à remettre en cause les bases idéologiques du colonialisme, en contestant notamment l'idée que les Européens auraient trouvé en Afrique des peuples véritablement sauvages, auxquels ils auraient apporté la civilisation :

Carl Einstein
Carl Einstein, ou Karl Einstein, né le 26 avril 1885 dans une famille juive à Neuwied et mort le 3 juillet 1940 à la frontière franco-espagnole, est un historien de l'art et écrivain allemand appartenant au courant de l'expressionnisme. Il est aussi le neveu du physicien Albert Einstein.
Biographie
Ami de George Grosz, Georges Braque et Picasso, sympathisant communiste et militant anarchiste, Carl Einstein a mêlé dans ses écrits des considérations à la fois esthétiques et politiques, s'intéressant tant au développement de l'art moderne qu'à la situation politique de l'Europe. De fait, il a traversé les guerres et révolutions qui ont secoué l'Europe dans la première moitié du XXe siècle : sensible aux implications sociales et politiques qui en découlèrent, il s'impliqua activement dans le Conseil révolutionnaire des soldats à Bruxelles et, dans une moindre mesure, dans la révolte spartakiste à Berlin, ainsi que, plus tard, dans la colonne Durruti de combattants anarchistes engagés dans la guerre d'Espagne. Einstein, du fait de sa confession juive, fut en outre directement concerné par la violente vague d'antisémitisme qui balaya l'Europe tout au long de son existence.

“Africa Remix” featured the work of over 100 African artists in a
2,200-sq.m exhibition space. With paintings by Chéri Samba,
installations by Barthélémy Toguo, drawings by Frédéric Bruly Bouabré
and photographs by Guy Tillim, “Africa Remix” revealed the varied
facets of Africa’s contemporary arts scene.
The
exhibition examined contemporary African art not only from an aesthetic
angle but also from historical, political and ideological perspectives.

near, and yet so far: Africa is an enigma that continues to exert a
strange fascination for many. “Africa Remix” was an invitation to
reflect on what Africa really means – to explore and rediscover it by

Art contemporain africainL’Art contemporain africain est très dynamique. Il s'inspire aussi bien des traditions du continent que, et c'est de plus en plus le cas, des réalités urbaines contemporaines d'une Afrique en mutation, qui se cherche encore une identité. Les techniques et les supports sont variés, allant de la simple peinture aux installations avec projection vidéo, en passant par des sculptures faites en matériaux de récupération...En 1989, l'exposition « Les magiciens de la terre » (Centre Pompidou, 1989) présentait des œuvres d'art africain contemporain (d'artistes vivants) pour la première fois en Europe, mode de monstration mettant en valeur un certain primitiviste et exotique. En 2005, l’exposition « Africa Remix » qui a été présentée en Allemagne, en Angleterre, en France et au Japon peut être considérée comme la première à présenter un panorama important de l'art contemporain spécifiquement africain, montrant surtout la richesse de l'art africain sub-saharien. Mais l'Afrique elle-même s'est dotée de centres d'art contemporain, de festivals ou biennales sont régulièrement organisés sur le continent pour mettre en valeur le talent des artistes d'aujourd'hui.
