Descrizione libro: I Punu, stanziati nella regione sud-occidentale del Gabon, fanno parte di un gruppo di popolazioni essenzialmente conosciute per le maschere bianche. Questi oggetti non hanno mai cessato di impressionare, dai collezionisti agli appassionati di arte africana, fino agli artisti occidentali dell'inizio del Novecento; Picasso, in particolare, ne possedeva una. Il volto ricoperto di argilla bianca, gli occhi leggermente a mandorla, la bocca dalle labbra rosse finemente contornate e l'acconciatura sofisticata composta di varie ciocche di capelli intrecciati, fanno parte delle caratteristiche stilistiche delle maschere. Gli autori studiano il contesto di uso rituale di questi importanti oggetti, che i Punu e le popolazioni loro collegate utilizzavano in occasione di danze chiamate, tra gli altri nomi, "mukuyi". Le maschere appartenevano al "bwiri", congregazione di soli uomini, e coloro che le portavano erano scelti esclusivamente tra gli iniziati. Costoro eseguivano danze acrobatiche su trampoli, il più delle volte in occasione di riti funerari e in onore degli antenati, incarnati dalle maschere. Questi ultimi assumevano, così, un ruolo di vigilanza allontanando le forze del male. Descriptions du produit:The Northern Hemisphere has long looked at the art of the Southern Hemisphere and equatorial regions as a collection of curios or travel trophies illustrating the essentially barbarous nature of its creators. Slowly such views are changing as more effort is put to understanding the individual works of art and their context in the societies that produced them. Art historian Meyer has attempted to integrate over 200 color photos together with a general text giving an overview of the role of the arts in various African cultures. Although her choppy text (translated from the French) will provide a basis for interested readers to start research, the bibliography is dated and leads mostly to French sources. Rather than present an overview, Newton, the former director of New York's Museum of Primitive Art, has produced a catalog of suberb photographs with scholarly explanatory captions. The objects, mostly of wood, are drawn from Geneva's Barbier-Mueller Museum, considered one of the best collections in the world. Photographed with great depth of field and subtle lighting designed to accentuate texture, the sculptures are brought to life by a fine-grain printing process. Meyer uses some photos that also appear in Newton's book, but the two works complement each other rather than overlap. The Newton book is the better choice for general collections, but the differences in explaining societal context and the different scope of coverage warrant placement of both books in comprehensive collections. La mostra presenta 50 capolavori di arte africana provenienti dai più antichi regni dell'Africa, conservati senza esporli, nei musei Nigeriani.

 

Nell'esposizione si propone un'Africa "classica", alternativa all'Africa "primitiva" a cui si fece riferimento nel 900 nell'arte e nella cultura.

 

Nel 1958 William Fagg, lo scopritore e massimo studioso dei bronzi dell'antica Ife scriveva mettendo direttamente a confronto l'arte classica greca con quella africana:

Giotto Dainelli, figlio del generale Luigi e di Virginia Mari, nacque a Firenze il 19 maggio 1878. Vantava ascendenze illustri: il padre era imparentato con i carbonari e patrioti bolognesi Zambeccari e Ranuzzi; la madre era figlia dell’avvocato Adriano Mari (1813-1887), politico della destra che rivestì importanti cariche istituzionali. Trascorse la sua infanzia lontano da Firenze, a seguito dei cambiamenti delle sedi di servizio del padre, ed ebbe modo di conoscere l’Europa data l’abitudine della famiglia di approfittare delle vacanze estive per compiere viaggi all’estero.

Nel 1900 si laureò in Scienze naturali all’Istituto di studi superiori di Firenze, dove fu allievo del geologo e paleontologo padovano Carlo De Stefani (1851-1924), all’epoca il più illustre docente della materia (fu direttore dell’Istituto di Geologia di Firenze e accademico dei Lincei); in seguito si perfezionò all’Università di
