Descriptions du produit: Ninety renowned masterpieces of African art that inspired artists at the Walt Disney studios. In 2005, the Walt Disney Company donated its Walt Disney-Tishman African Art Collection to the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C. Considered one of the world's finest collections of African art, the Disney-Tishman Collection contains iconic pieces dating from the fifteenth to twentieth centuries and showcases art that represents seventy-five peoples and twenty countries. This book explores the many ways that the collection reflects Africa's rich history and culture and focuses particularly on objects used in performance, rituals, and as emblems of power. Figures carved in stone, wood, and ivory; stools, masks, crowns, jewelry, and hunting tools--each object is presented in vivid color plates and accompanied by texts providing information about the objects' history, uses, and materials. This beautiful book accompanies the first public presentation of the collection in the past twenty years, permitting a new generation to experience one of America's national treasures.

ISBN-10: 287939032X - ISBN-13: 978-2879390321
Descriptions du produit:The Northern Hemisphere has long looked at the art of the Southern Hemisphere and equatorial regions as a collection of curios or travel trophies illustrating the essentially barbarous nature of its creators. Slowly such views are changing as more effort is put to understanding the individual works of art and their context in the societies that produced them. Art historian Meyer has attempted to integrate over 200 color photos together with a general text giving an overview of the role of the arts in various African cultures. Although her choppy text (translated from the French) will provide a basis for interested readers to start research, the bibliography is dated and leads mostly to French sources. Rather than present an overview, Newton, the former director of New York's Museum of Primitive Art, has produced a catalog of suberb photographs with scholarly explanatory captions. The objects, mostly of wood, are drawn from Geneva's Barbier-Mueller Museum, considered one of the best collections in the world. Photographed with great depth of field and subtle lighting designed to accentuate texture, the sculptures are brought to life by a fine-grain printing process. Meyer uses some photos that also appear in Newton's book, but the two works complement each other rather than overlap. The Newton book is the better choice for general collections, but the differences in explaining societal context and the different scope of coverage warrant placement of both books in comprehensive collections. Descriptions du produit:
Most museum exhibitions and books on African art focus on masks and figurative sculptures, largely ignoring many types of objects common in African cultures that "demonstrate an aesthetic sensibility all the more remarkable for serving the humblest of purposes." In this volume, Meyer offers a splendidly illustrated survey of everyday, primarily utilitarian objects furnishings, culinary utensils, textiles, jewelry, weapons, musical instruments, games, pipes, regalia, that reveal undeniable beauty of design, ornamentation, or display. Less detailed and scholarly than Roy Sieber's catalog African Furniture and Household Objects (Indiana Univ. Pr., 1980), Meyer's work nevertheless offers concise introductions to scores of categories of objects that are both essential to, and revealing of, the nature of African life. Highly recommended for public library collections of African studies or art. Dr. Eugene C. Burt, Art Inst. of Seattle

Descrizione libro: Magnificently loaded with elegant plates of ceremonial and tribal objects from the Chokwe tribe and others in Angola, this exhibition catalog accompanies a show originating at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama; editor Jordàn, who spent more than two years with the Chokwe and related tribes, is the museum's curator. The objects are mostly carved wood, but their polished, stylized vision of people and nature and the variety and especially the depth of feeling in masks raise them far above craft. The pieces are shown alone, as in a museum exhibit, with art stressed more than anthropology. To remedy this, seven scholarly articles by authorities on the Chokwe appear throughout, along with photos of native life. While this puts into context objects like whistles, thrones, and the intriguing divination baskets full of tiny magical charms, it has a somewhat choppy effect. One of a series of books on African art by Prestel (e.g., African Art from the Han Corey Collection, LJ 6/15/98), this covers a seldom-visited area rich in heritage. Descrizione libro: The ancient kingdoms of the Cameroon Grassfields are famous for their splendid artworks - thrones ornamented with precious European beads, wooden figures sculptured by unknown masters, enormous drums, finely carved jewelry made from ivory and brass, as well as fabulous masks. This book presents 150 impressive masterpieces from the courts of the Grassfield kingdoms. Historical photographs illustrate the magnificent life at the courts so enthusiastically described by the first European visitors in the late 19th century. Additional field photographs taken in recent years show that the traditions in the Grassfields are still alive and cared for today. Two leading scholars in the field of Cameroonian art give an important introduction to the fascinating and complex world of the Grassfield kingdoms: their rituals, secret societies, and, above all, the meaning of art in this context. Christraud M. Geary explores the dynamic of palace art in the kingdom of Bamum, whch repeatedly adapted to ever-changing conditions and maintained a continuous dialogue with the outside world. Hans-Joachim Koloss gives a detailed overview of court art in the North West Province, focusing in particular on the numerous masks which are owned by the palaces as well as the secret

These two books by the same publisher are very similar in a number of ways?they are designed to accompany major European exhibitions; contain hundreds of visually impressive photos of some of the finest works of African artistry; and cover the art of Africa while emphasizing the sculpture of West and Central Africa. These similarities aside, the books differ significantly in terms of the nature of the text and the focus of the content. Early in the 20th century a small number of European collectors acquired significant collections of African art. Han Coray (1880-1974), a modern art dealer in Zurich, was one of the earliest of those collectors, and his extensive collection eventually became the property of the Zurich University Ethnographic Museum. African Art is a catalog of that collection, with over 300 photographs of the objects. While most of the catalog entries provide useful information about the objects, some are unsatisfyingly only descriptive. More than a dozen essays are also provided,

Book Description: The Urhobo peoples occupy the western fringe of the Niger River delta in southern Nigeria, an area rich with oil reserves. Since the 1970s, the petroleum industry has brought worldwide wealth and attention to Nigeria, but tragically has also detracted from broad-based economic progress as flow stations, flare-offs, drilling platforms and pipelines have proliferated. As rural economies suffered an inevitable decline, the custom of maintaining traditional Urhobo art has experienced a parallel atrophy. The resultant decline in Urhobo culture has prompted a response among many Urhobo who want to celebrate and preserve their traditions for future generations. The Museum for African Art in New York makes a major contribution to this effort through the presentation of Where Gods and Mortals meet, the first exhibition to showcase Urhobo arts. The exhibition introduces never-before-seen Urhobo art and footage of cultural performances, from yesterday and today. This accompanying catalogue includes approximately 80 works of art: traditional art from the historical period 1850 to 1975, including monumental wood figures, metal and clay sculpture, and masks and costumes with accompanying poetry and song; a small selection of contemporary work by Bruce Onobrakpeya, an Urhobo by birth and one of Africa's foremost artists; plus photos and video footage of extraordinary multimedia masquerades. Edited by Perkins Foss.Essays by John Picton, Perkins Foss, Michael Y. Nabofa, G.G. Darah, Tanure Ojaide, and Bruce Onobrakpeya. Foreword by Peter Ekeh. Saffron Books [EAP London], 2005. Hardcover. 1st Edition. "Column to Volume: Formal Innovation in Chamba Statuary" investigates the appearance on world art markets during the 1970s of statues identified as Chamba from West Africa. Sought after for their artful execution, these statues were stylistically unlike anything previously documented from the region. Are they what the art market claimed? Who made them, when, where and why?To answer these questions, Richard Fardon and Christine Stelzig had to combine the findings of ethnographic research in Cameroon and Nigeria with museum and archival research and the testimonies of art dealers and collectors. Profusely illustrated, "Column to Volume" offers a comprehensive account of an important sculptural tradition in West Africa, as well as fascinating insights into the tribal branding, distribution, and copying, of African art works during the 1970s.Identifying formal innovation in what has been described as 'tribal' tradition, not least by tracing the individual sculptor irresponsible for
