En 1937, le hasard d'une exposition1 mit en présence deux sièges à
cariatide « royaux »2 d'origine Luba (Zaïre) qui offraient entre eux de
frappantes similitudes, tout en présentant d'étroites analogies avec la
célèbre porteuse de coupe agenouillée, conservée au Musée de Tervuren3.
Tout en entrant incontestablement dans l'orbe de la grande statuaire des
Baluba (plus précisément du groupe des Bahemba-Bakunda), ces œuvres
s'écartaient à tel point des canons esthétiques fondamentaux de ce peuple
que l'organisateur de l'exposition, Fr. M. Olbrechts, acquit la conviction

conforte la place de Paris comme capitale des arts premiers
Les arts premiers fascinent car ils racontent une histoire dont on ne saisit parfois que les contours et
qui ne livre souvent qu’une partie de ses secrets. Cet appétit pour l’art tribal, très répandu en Europe
et aux Etats-Unis, se développe dans le monde entier.
Est-ce l’histoire coloniale, le goût des surréalistes pour les mystères ethniques ou encore les emprunts
de l’art nouveau au répertoire primitif, toujours est-il que les amateurs d’art vont naturellement vers
cet art des origines. Indéniablement, Paris apparaît aujourd’hui comme la capitale des arts premiers, à
l’image du grand nombre de galeries parisiennes internationalement connues et du succès régulier du
Parcours des Mondes en septembre, dont Paris Tribal se veut aujourd’hui le complément.
Forts de ce constat et conscients de l’arrivée sur le marché d’une génération de collectionneurs férus
d’art contemporain mais désireux de s’initier aux arts premiers, les marchands parisiens ont décidé de
créer un nouvel évènement au printemps pour montrer leur capacité

Henri Kamer, who was president of the International Arts Experts Association at the time, published an outstanding account of the state of the matter in Artes d'Afrique Noire, No. 12 (1974). Évolution conceptuelle en histoire de l'art africain
1. Le paradigme évolutionniste, concept scientifique pour interpréter les arts africains :
L'acquisition d'objets culturels africains lors de la colonisation favorise le développement de recherches scientifiques, tant sur le plan ethnologique que sur le plan de l'histoire de l'art. Pour Valentin Mudimbé, il y a en parallèle une quête promotionnelle de ces objets, considérés alors comme oeuvres d'art (dénommé : "art nègre", "art primitif"). Ces deux approches utilisent le concept de "primitif" pour interpréter les objets observés et présentés.
L'analyse esthétique de ces objets est fortement influencée au début par les paradigmes et les concepts évolutionnistes issus de l'anthropologie - "phase d'ethnologisation" des cultures africaines, qui consiste à isoler les particularités culturelles, les objets et les sociétés.
À la fin du XIXe siècle, Edward B. Tylor établit dans son ouvrage Primitive culture : researches int the development of mythology, religion, language, art and custom (1871) une relation entre les arts et les mentalités afin d'illustrer le caractère "primitife" et "inférieur" des populations étudiées. Les arts sont définis suivant leur développement technique. Ainsi, "il s'agit d'art de ces individus restés jusqu'à une époque récente à un niveau technique peu avancé, qui utilisent des outils mais pas des machines" (Sally Price 1995, 11). These two books by the same publisher are very similar in a number of ways?they are designed to accompany major European exhibitions; contain hundreds of visually impressive photos of some of the finest works of African artistry; and cover the art of Africa while emphasizing the sculpture of West and Central Africa. These similarities aside, the books differ significantly in terms of the nature of the text and the focus of the content. Early in the 20th century a small number of European collectors acquired significant collections of African art. Han Coray (1880-1974), a modern art dealer in Zurich, was one of the earliest of those collectors, and his extensive collection eventually became the property of the Zurich University Ethnographic Museum.
